Why this one

Most people can describe what they are building. Almost nobody can describe who it is for.

Small businesses. Founders. Ops teams. Those all sound like answers, and none of them are, because you could not go and find one this afternoon.

And everything downstream inherits it. The offer stays vague, the pricing is a guess, you do not know what to post, and there is nobody specific to call.

So that is where we start, and it is two moves rather than one.

The ninety minutes

What we actually do.

Narrow the buyer

From a category to somebody you could go and find this afternoon.

"Small businesses" is not a person. "Bookkeepers at firms with four to twelve staff" is a person, because you could name five of them by Friday.

Upgrade them

This is the move almost nobody makes, and it matters more than the first one.

Narrowing gets you fewer people. Upgrading gets you better ones. From whoever has the problem to whoever is bleeding from it and can actually pay to stop.

Those are usually different people. Describing the one who suffers rather than the one who signs is the most common reason a genuinely good idea goes nowhere. And when the buyer changes, the offer changes underneath you. That is the whole workshop.

Their language

Twenty years in an industry gives you a vocabulary your buyer does not use. You will write "suboptimal reconciliation workflows." They would say "I spend every Friday fixing spreadsheets."

Same problem. Only one of them is sellable.

The model

Now you can map what is actually in their way. The result you are promising, the three obstacles between them and it, and what gets done about each one.

That is the page. Most people have never seen their whole business on one, and it is usually the first time it holds still long enough to look at.

What the page is for

Three of these get worked live in the room, by me and by a guest with a long career building and scaling tech products. You see it done rather than described.

Your offer
The middle of the page is what you sell, and it gives you the sentence to say it in.
Your roadmap
The obstacles are what to build, in the order they need solving. A sequence, not a feature list.
Your content
The obstacles are also what to talk about. For most people that is the first honest answer they have had to what do I actually post.

Bring

  • Whatever you have got, however rough
  • A plan, a deck, a product nobody is using, or just the idea

You get

  • The recording, so the timezone does not decide it for you
  • The template, yours to keep
  • Your page counts as your Sprint application, so there is no form to fill in afterwards

Who this is not for

  • You already have paying customers. You have proved it and you do not need this
  • You want someone to build the product for you
  • You are not going to have the conversations. Ninety minutes will not help

I enjoyed it. Especially because I got to know what the right MVP looks like. Everyone has similar questions and that was nice to know too.

MVP session attendee
Who is running it

Two people looking at your offer, rather than one.

Matt Ainsworth, founder of Global Day Zero. Twenty years across product, marketing, comms and sales. Nine of them in Tokyo, training teams at McKinsey, BCG, Morgan Stanley and Sony, and coaching founders across Japan and Australia for most of the last decade.

Plus a guest with a long career building and scaling tech products. He will be working through the offers alongside me, so you get two people looking at yours rather than one.
